Here Are the Latinos Who Got Nominated (and Snubbed) at the 2016 Grammys

The nominees for the 58th edition of the Grammys are out! This time, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd take the lead, with 11 for the rapper and seven for the two singers. We’re fresh off the Latin Grammys ceremony, but let’s take a look and see how Latin@s did this time around.

In the main categories, Bruno Mars scored a nomination for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Uptown Funk,” his collaboration with Mark Ronson. Miguel is also up for two awards: Best R&B Song (“Coffee”) and Best Urban Contemporary Album (Wildheart).

Björk’s Vulnicura is nominated for Best Alternative Album, which means our beloved Alejandro Ghersi, aka Arca, is also up for a nod at this year’s ceremony. Will he be her +1? Will he attend the gala wearing platforms and an all-leather outfit? We’re crossing our fingers.

There are no surprises in the Latin Pop Album category, but it’s still nice to see Julieta Venegas’ name pop out between Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin, Pablo Alborán, and Alex Cuba. On the other hand, we’re thrilled to see Natalia Lafourcade, Bomba Estéreo, Monsieur Periné battle it out in the Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album category. We don’t want to make assumptions, but remember Lafourcade was the big winner at the Latin Grammys this year, taking home five awards. Things are looking pretty good for her, but, then again, Pitbull is also in the competition.

After being nixed from this year’s Academy Awards nominations, Antonio Sánchez is getting recognition by the Recording Academy with a spot for Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, for his outstanding Birdman drum score. We hope he gets his revenge. Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda was nominated once again (he won in 2008 for In The Heights), this time in the Musical Theater Album category for his work on Hamilton. He’s on the verge of joining the very short EGOT list, only missing an Oscar.

Other Latin categories include nominations for artists like Banda El Recodo, La Maquinaria Norteña, Los Cojolites, Los Tigres del Norte, and Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano (Regional Mexican Music Album); and José Alberto El Canario, Rubén Blades, Guaco, Juan Luis Guerra, and Victor Manuelle (Tropical Album). Our favorite we-can’t-believe-he’s-Mexican comedian Louis CK has a chance of winning Best Comedy Album for his special Live at Madison Square Garden.

The entire list of nominees can be found here.

Correction, 12/7/15, 3:46 p.m.: A previous version of this article referred to the ceremony as the 48th Grammy Awards. The ceremony will be the 58th – not 48th – edition of the Grammys. The previous version of this article also stated that Lin-Manuel Miranda had not earned an Emmy, but he won the award in 2014 for co-writing “Bigger!,” the opening number of the 2013 Tony Awards.
