A reportedly three-year-old video of Cardi B talking about her past is making the rounds on social media, and the Bronx-born rapper has responded to backlash surrounding the clip. In the emotional video, Cardi discusses her past as a stripper, revealing she drugged and robbed men. “I had to go strip, I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to fuck me? Yeah, let’s go back to this hotel.’” she says, choking back tears. “And I drugged n••••• up and I robbed them. That’s what I used to do.”

The video resurfaced online over the weekend. Cardi came under fire on social media; some compared the incident to R. Kelly’s sexual assault allegations and created the hashtag #SurvivingCardiB, while others stated that Kelly has exhibited a pattern of serial abuse that does not resemble Cardi’s behavior.

On Tuesday, Cardi B issued a statement on Instagram addressing the situation. “I never claim to be perfect or come from a perfect world wit[h] a perfect past I always speak my truth I always own my shit,” she wrote. “I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options. I was blessed to have been able to rise from that but so many women have not. The men I spoke about in my live were men that I dated that I was involve[d] with, men that were conscious and willing and aware,” she continued.
