Cardi B had other plans in mind before taking the stage at this weekend’s Austin City Limits festival, and those plans involved her abuela, and La Mayimba herself. Only a day before her scheduled set at ACL, Cardi B flew down to the Dominican Republic to visit her family in El Cibao. They had all gathered to celebrate her grandmother’s 80th birthday, and special guest Fefita la Grande was there to score the night — and, of course, get down to her own merengues with Cardi. It doesn’t really get any better than two Quisqueya queens cutting up the dance floor at abuela’s 80th, does it?
In videos posted across social media, Cardi B and her sister, Hennessy, were spotted dancing alongside the merenguera, Fefita la Grande (who, at 75, was bringing us all to shame with her moves!) Among the songs played that night, Fefita featured “Vamos a Hablar Inglés,” which may just be Cardi’s favorite song of hers, given that she posted herself dancing to the legendary track on Instagram stories in the past. Not to mention, Fefita la Grande has proposed the idea of remixing this track with Cardi at some point in the future. It looks like all of this may have proved just a little too exciting for Cardi, who ended up arriving late the next day to her scheduled set at ACL.
While this birthday party wasn’t quite the collab between Fefita la Grande and Cardi B that we’ve all been waiting for, it’s still a welcome treat to see these ladies finally joining forces to celebrate. After all, as if Cardi B’s dancing video wasn’t enough, these two have shared a social media love affair for some time now. Cardi has shouted out Fefita before on Instagram, and after this weekend’s get together, Fefita took to Instagram herself to thank Cardi and the Almanzar family for having her, and hinted that this party was “only one big thing,” of hopefully many to come. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for that remix!
