After melting the hearts of the world over last fall, Coco is finally ready for its reckoning at the Oscars on March 4. Pixar’s latest flick is nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me.” The film’s charming signature song highlights Coco‘s themes of honoring your ancestral roots – and definitely left us in a puddle of our own tears multiple times over the course of the movie.
Fans will be happy to learn that Miguel, Natalia Lafourcade, and Gael García Bernal are teaming up for a live performance of “Remember Me” at The Academy Awards. Last fall, Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade collaborated on a version of the song for the film’s end credits, a sugary acoustic duet whose video found the pair honoring their loved ones at a Día de Muertos altar. In the film itself, Gael García Bernal also lends his voice for a version of “Remember Me,” sung by his character Hector, a skeletal trickster who accompanies protagonist Miguel on his journey through the Land of the Dead.
This will be the first live performance from the Mexican trio of stars. Industry favorites like Common and Sufjan Stevens will also be playing their much celebrated nominated songs over the course of the night. Whether or not Coco secures the Academy Award, the performance feels noteworthy, since Spanish-language or bilingual songs rarely get shine on the Oscars stage. The last time a song was performed in Spanish at the ceremony was in 2005, when Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana interpreted Jorge Drexler’s song “Al otro lado del río” from The Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack. It was also the first time an Oscar was awarded to a Spanish-language song, so the performance will definitely be historic.
