The nominations for the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards were announced last night (Jan. 18). Among the Latine artists in the LGBTQ+ community that were recognized are Demi Lovato, Anitta, and Omar Apollo.

Every year, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) recognizes LGBTQ+ talent and media throughout the entertainment industry. The nominations were announced by drag queens Sasha Colby and Salina EsTitties, who are both competing on season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. In the music categories, Demi Lovato, Anitta, and Omar Apollo were nominated.

For Outstanding Music Artist, Lovato is nominated with her album Holy Fvck. She identifies as fluid. Last year, Lovato’s album went viral thanks to the song “29.” In the pop-punk track, she appeared to talk about her past relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama. The age gap between Lovato and Valderrama opened up discussions online about grooming in relationships.

Anitta is also nominated for Outstanding Music Artist with her album Versions of Me. The LP featured her global hit “Envolver.” In March of last year, she was recognized by Guinness World Records as the first solo Latine artist to reach No. 1 on Spotify. “Envolver” hit the top spot of Spotify’s Global Chart. The album also included her bisexual anthem “Me Gusta,” featuring Cardi B.

Omar Apollo is the sole Latine artist nominated for Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist. Last year, the Mexican-American singer opened up about his queer relationships in his debut album Ivory. The LP garnered an unexpected hit with “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All),” which went viral on TikTok. Apollo appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time with the song. Both Omar and Anitta are nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards next month.

The winners will be announced during two live ceremonies. The first ceremony will take place in L.A. on March 30, and the second one will follow in New York City on May 13.
