Kid Cudi paid tribute to late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain during his musical performance on Saturday Night Live this weekend (April 10). During his second song of the night, the “Day ‘n’ Nite” musician stepped onto the stage wearing a floral dress with spaghetti straps and matching necklace. He sang “Sad People” from his 2020 studio album Man on the Moon III: The Chosen.
Cobain would famously wear women’s clothing on occasion. He once told British music magazine Melody Maker that “there’s nothing more comfortable than a cozy flower pattern.”
The following day, the Afro-Latino rapper revealed that fashion designer Virgil Abloh made the dress for him and that it would be part of a collection that he and Abloh’s Off White brand they are collaborating on.
During Cudi’s first song on SNL earlier that evening, he wore an olive-green cardigan like the one Cobain wore during Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged concert in New York City. He also honored late SNL comedian Chris Farley by wearing a t-shirt with Farley’s photo printed on it under his ratty green sweater.
It was his dress, however, that got the most attention online. Cudi even found time at the end of “Sad
People” to do a little curtsey for the audience.
At the end of the show when the entire cast came together on stage to say goodbye, Cudi, still sporting the flower dress, flexed.
Cudi’s next album, Entergalactic, is set to drop sometime in 2022. He also has a collaborative album, The Scotts, with Travis Scott on the way. This year, Cudi is set to have a small role in writer/director Adam McKay’s (Vice) comedy Don’t Look Up. The film features a star-studded cast, including Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep.
