Unless you couldn’t care less about reggaeton (much like Aleks Synteks), then this update about Premios Tu Música Urbano is bound to excite you: the awards show is coming back! It’s set to air on March 5, 2020, and will be broadcasted from Puerto Rico’s José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, affectionately known as “El Choli.”

This is huge news, especially amidst recent criticism of the Latin Grammys. Whereas 2019’s Latin Grammys snubbed reggaeton from its main awards categories yet again, Premios Tu Música Urbano is perfectly poised to teach the Academy a lesson. The awards show focuses on recognizing artists — both worldwide and locally — who have entered into the wide-ranging urbano scene. And there’s no stuffy nomination committee here; the final winners are chosen by a select team of radio hosts, influencers, and journalists with real authority when it comes to all things urbano.

The Tu Música Urbano awards have already shown that urbano artists not only deserve nominations — audiences also want to see them win. When the awards premiered earlier this year, the broadcast reached 52 countries and 80 million viewers. In Puerto Rico alone, it was reported that nearly 80% of televisions tuned in for the show. That’s approximately four times the viewership reported for February’s Grammys — which was only counted at 22 million viewers, in comparison.

Nominees will be announced for the second annual Premios Tu Música Urbano on December 11, 2019, along with new categories. Time to show the Latin Grammys how it’s done.
