Words to make your heart beat faster: “Hola, me llamo Onika/Wrist frío/Pelo rosa/Culo gordo.” This weekend, the world learned from Instagram of Nicki Minaj and 21 Savage’s features on the upcoming remix of Bad Bunny, Farruko, and Rvssian’s stoner turn-up “Krippy Kush” – and it looks like Nicki delivers a part of her verse in Spanish.
Of course, this is not Nicki’s first offering to her Latino fans (did you forget her 2014 bachata duet “Animales” with Romeo Santos?). But where that track cooed, the “Krippy Kush” pile-on is an opportunity for Onika to do what she does best; throw lyrical elbows until her posse of artistic identities rises once again to the top.
We’re starting to see a pattern when it comes to El Conejo Malo’s geographic trajectory in the later half of 2017. His recent EDM spin cycle “Move Your Body” was produced by Timbaland, another clue that the Puerto Rican trapper’s team has its sights set on parlaying his lightning-quick rise through the trap en español ranks into a kind of mainstream fame once reserved for English-language rappers.
Trap en español continues to soar in 2017, and its latest peak is this link-up between Bad Bunny and some of the hip-hop artists who inspired the movement in the first place. Only time will tell if the trap en español wave offers another avenue for Latinos’ long-term presence in the mainstream pop landscape, but it’s certainly a sign of opportunity for more collaboration between Anglo and Latino creators.
