The immigrant caravan headed for the U.S. border has reached Mexico City and settled in a sports complex for a few days before moving forward. At the Jesús Martínez Palillo stadium, the people from Honduras as well as Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua received donations of food and clothes that had been gathered by many Mexicans in order for them to be well-fed, clothed, and healthy. Unexpectedly, they also got a surprise visit by two members of one of the biggest rock bands in Latin America.
Rubén Albarrán and Emmanuel del Real walked the grounds of the stadium to talk with many of the immigrants and even played a few songs aided just by a guitar. National newspaper La Jornada was on hand to capture video of the duo playing “Las Flores” and “Olita de Alta Mar.” Rubén explained that they visited the temporary shelter to give the people a welcome and wishes of safe travels, and urged other Mexicans to be “open-hearted” in order to help them make their way across the country, as well as avoid discrimination. “We’re all immigrants,” Albarrán said. “No human being is illegal.”
Rubén also called out the absurdities of capitalism, a system that criminalizes immigrants without papers yet exploits undocumented labor. He also declared that governments should make it as easy as possible for the caravan to travel to their final destination.
Both Tacvbos talked and took pictures with the people, extending a friendly hand to people who have endured much hardship and will most certainly still face challenges before reaching their final destination. The caravan leaders are expected to decide their next course of action tonight (Thursday, November 8).
