On Tuesday, Calle 13 alum Residente went on Instagram Live, where he spilled the beans on the follow-up to his Grammy Award-winning debut solo album, which he released in 2017. According to local newspaper El Nuevo Día, René Pérez Joglar shared that he’s currently in the process of finishing his still-untitled sophomore record, which will feature 16 tracks and a couple of unexpected guests.

During the Instagram Live, he revealed that he had collaborations with Juan Luis Guerra and Rubén Blades in the works. If you follow Residente on Instagram, you might have already seen previews of these new collaborations. Earlier this week, René and Blades were spotted at New York’s hallowed Electric Lady Studios. Pérez called Blades his “teacher” when he shared a photo of them on Instagram, writing, “They asked me for hits, but [it’s] better we make music.” Juan Luis Guerra also appeared on Residente’s Instagram last week.

A fan also asked him if he would collaborate with his new best friend Bad Bunny, to which he only replied, “Benito is a good guy…Let’s see,” before explaining that he doesn’t choose his collaborators based on popularity. He mentioned that, just like he did on his last project, the new album would showcase a diversity of genres and styles. When he was questioned about trap en español, he said, “Latin trap rocks. What do I think about Latin trap? It depends on the lyrics…It depends on the people’s ability to write; it’s not about the musical genre, but the artist. Give Rubén Blades a dembow track and see how he tears it apart.”

We might not be hearing a Residente and Blades dembow tune anytime soon, but do keep an eye out for more details on the solo record.
