Canarian producer El Guincho (a.k.a Pablo Díaz-Reixa) has hinted at a return to the stage over the past year, DJing at Mexican festivals Corona Capital and Nrmal, and quietly appearing on Javiera Mena’s 2014 track “La Carretera.” Indie pop fans mourned his absence after two years of promoting and touring in support of his 2010 album Pop Negro. Now they have something to look forward to with the recent announcement of HiperAsia, a new album dropping this fall via Everlasting Records.
While it’s not clear if HiperAsia will be a full-length, El Guincho has already shared two singles, titled “(Con un) Rotu Seco” and “Mis Hits.” The album artwork and the record’s official website feature images of HiperAsia rubber bracelets, suggesting this might be something bigger than a maxi-single.
On “(Con un) Rotu Seco” and “Mis Hits,” El Guincho experiments with a glitchy form of future bass that suits his own buoyant style, fusing his pop sensibility with a genre that’s been on the forefront of global dancefloors.
“Mis Hits” is the glitchier track of the two, a song that could easily fit into the catalog of an artist like El Sueño de la Casa Propia. It opens with a sample claiming “yo con esto ya voy a dejar el baile, yo con esto me voy a retirar” and ends with Pablo’s looped voice repeating that the only thing he wants right now is “más dinero.”
It seems like this record might be his final project, but let’s not read too much into that and enjoy this new material–and the renewed possibility of seeing El Guincho on a stage, destroying every MIDI instrument in sight.
