Four years ago, Centavrvs’ Sombras de Oro became somewhat of a phenomenon, an album that took Mexican regional music, tore it into tiny bits, and reassembled it with the help of electronic beats. The result was something that couldn’t be ignored and soon found them touring the world. We’ve been waiting for a follow-up to materialize ever since.

Fast forward to today, and Centavrvs stans finally have something to cheer for. Their new album Somos Uno will drop on March 16, and they’ve released a brand new single called “Debilidad” to hold us over. Like previously released track “El Punto Final,” Somos Uno was produced by Argentine rock mainstay Tweety González. Following in the vein of that track, it showcases their newly discovered interest in music beyond Mexican folk.

Unlike the Fania worship of “El Punto Final,” “Debilidad” digs deep into the history of Mexican and Latin American music in the 20th century. The vocal melodies resemble those of danzón bands of the 1930s, while the off-the-cuff production effects reference Esquivel. Meanwhile, the rhythm is all 80s cumbia.

Somos Uno is a musical salute to Latin American music, and should satisfy everyone looking for new grooves.

Centavrvs’ Somos Uno drops on March 16.
