Disney’s animated feature Encanto is making a big splash in theaters and on Disney+, but it’s also climbing the music charts with its soundtrack.
The songs on the soundtrack were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, while the cinematic score was written by Germaine Franco. According to Forbes, Encanto’s soundtrack hit No. 7 on the Billboard Top 100 this week. Last week, it was ranked at No. 110. The song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” debuted at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is currently No. 1 on Spotify.
“Bruno” is a song that explains why the main family at the center of the movie, the Madrigals, do not like to talk about their estranged uncle, Bruno (John Leguizamo), a prophet who is considered the black sheep of the family. His backstory is connected to the reason the film’s main protagonist, Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), is the only member of the family not to be born with a superpower.
Another song from Encanto, “Surface Pressure,” debuted at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. The track is sung by Jessica Darrow, who lends her voice to the character Luisa, a brawny Latina who sings about her toughness, but also about the pressure she’s under to always be the strong one in her family.
Other songs from the soundtrack include “The Family Madrigal,” “Waiting on a Miracle,” All of You,” and “Dos Oruguitas,” which is receiving a lot of buzz for a possible Oscar nomination for Best Original Song this year. If nominated, it will be Miranda’s second nod of his career. He received an Oscar nomination in 2017 for the song “How Far I’ll Go” from the Disney film Moana.
