Mexican vocalist Girl Ultra is quickly bubbling up to the center stage in her home country, and she’s already hinting at a great 2018 ahead. Only a few days after announcing her set at this year’s Festival Ceremonia alongside the likes of Beck, St. Vincent, and Arca, the up-and-coming R&B diva shares a brand new single, which also sets the wheels in motion for Finesse Records and the string of releases they have planned for this year.
The melancholy R&B of “Llama” comes courtesy of Guadalajara producer Phynx, who you might remember from these fire J Balvin, Drake, and Plan B remixes. On the track, Girl Ultra mournfully coos, “Llama antes de irte a dormir/Baby, acuérdate de mí.” Her pain is palpable as she taps into the familiar feeling of slowly becoming emotionally dependent on a significant other, even if the relationship is over – to the point of losing your individuality.
The new single comes with a music video, directed by Gabriela Marcos, who does a spot-on job of representing the lyrics through these visuals. Here, Girl Ultra remains perfectly still, waiting by the phone for her lover to call while the world keeps turning around her. The tightly framed and expertly art directed set could catch fire, and Girl Ultra wouldn’t even move a finger, waiting hopefully for the phone to ring and lead her out of her loneliness.
“Llama” will appear on an upcoming EP, Girl Ultra’s follow-up to her 2017 debut Boys.
