Helado Negro’s “It’s My Brown Skin” Video is a Love Letter to Brooklyn’s POC Communities

Helado Negro (aka Roberto Carlos Lange) is feeling the brown skin he’s in — and he’s spreading his message of self-love in his newest video, which just dropped today.

The clip is for “It’s My Brown Skin,” one of the most intimate songs off of his powerful new album Private Energy, out now through Asthmatic Kitty. Last month, the Brooklyn-based artist told us that he wrote the track for all brown kids who might feel insecure in today’s racially turbulent world.

Directed by Venezuelan artist Martin Allais, the video is a cheerful, somewhat conceptual high-five to people of color. We see Helado Negro trotting through the streets of Brooklyn and encountering various locals near Bushwick and Maria Hernández Park. His walk is interspersed with moments of animation by Animal Studios that offer different interpretations of identity and skin color.

“It’s a broad stroke of overlapping thoughts on people of color and a continual love for all shades of brown,” Lange explained.

Watch the video through to the very end — in addition to the animation, our favorite part might by the end credits, which feature one lovable tío performing a sweet rendition of “Perfidia.”
