With the field almost set and just a few more spots to fill out, World Cup anticipation is ramping up ahead of next year’s tournament. Those that have already secured their spots can now enjoy all the lead up to Russia. Part of that long march to the final in Moscow has already begun, as Adidas unveiled the first wave of World Cup kits for already-qualified nations.
The theme of Russia 2018 appears to be “retro” looks; drawing on inspiration from classic kits from past tournaments, the Three Stripes nailed these jerseys.
Colombia’s kit hops in a time machine back to Italia 1990, with a tricolor pattern coming across the chest that reminds you of Carlos Valderrama’s hair blowing in the wind.
Meanwhile, Argentina hopes to bring some good luck by taking it back to its championship 1993 Copa America team with a minimalistic approach featuring more white than previous years. That Copa was the albiceleste’s last international trophy; they’re hoping to change that in what could be Lionel Messi’s last real chance at winning the World Cup.
Finally, for Mexico, Adidas came through with a more conservative approach to El Tri’s ’93 and ’95 kits. A zig zag design comes across the body of the bright green jerseys. As Mexico attempts to make it past the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time ever, they’ll at least do so looking quite stylish.
There are still more kits to come as the tournament approaches, including the uniforms from the rest of South America, as well as Costa Rica and Panama. Will we also get the chance to see Honduras’ new jerseys? Depends on their matches against Australia this week. As for Peru’s iconic red sash get-up, if La Blanquirroja can topple New Zealand, one of the best kits in soccer history will make its glorious return to the World Cup.
