Open the floodgates. Mexico is ready. And Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa might be the perfect man to replace Miguel Herrera at the helm of the Mexican national team. Right?
WRONG. Sources from the Mexican Football Federation are reporting that the Rosario native has officially turned down an offer to replace Herrera ahead of Mexico’s run of international friendlies and Confederations Cup playoff match against the United States on October 10.
Bielsa’s sudden resignation from Olympique de Marseille following a disappointing loss to Caen in the club’s Ligue 1 opener shocked the world. In a press conference immediately following the match, he emphatically stated that his time in France had come to its fin: “My work here is over, I will return to my country. I am not leaving here to take another job.”
Despite press speculation, like ESPN Deportes’ John Sutcliffe revealing that Bielsa was El Tri’s “Plan A, B, and C,” the cult hero coach wasn’t lying when he stated that his decision had nothing to do with the vacant Mexico position.
With his personal experience (with Atlas, América, La Albiceleste, and La Roja), strange 3-3-3-1 formations, high pressure and man marking style, a character like El Loco could have been a stellar replacement for El Piojo. Nature taking its course. But unfortunately, it looks like El Tri is out of luck this time around.
