Lionel Messi Shocked No One By Winning a Bunch of Awards Last Night

Lionel Messi took home not one but two domestic league prizes at the 2014-15 LFP Gala Awards Ceremony in Barcelona last night. The Argentine was named La Liga’s best striker and best player, after scoring 43 goals and 18 assists in 3,375 minutes of league action. Barça also won the league, the Copa del Rey AND the Champions League. Wow.

But check this – Cristiano, in comparison, scored 48 goals and dished out 16 assists in 3,099 minutes last season. Hm…It’s always difficult to discern where we draw the line between individual brilliance and team success when it comes to these solo accolades.

Upon receiving the award, Messi said that he wanted to dedicate it to his 3-year-old son, Thiago. “Every time I leave the house he gets angry and asks me, ‘Papa, are you leaving to score goals again?’ This award is for him.” ?

Most people were delighted for the Barça crack, but some madridistas were feeling a bit salty…

Arbeloa and Messi. In the same sentence. Oh yes.

Strangely enough, Messi wasn’t even nominated for Best South American Player. Did they think that three awards were too much? Did they just want Neymar to get a little taste of glory? Whatever the reason, it really makes no sense whatsoever.

This is a week of congratulations and celebratory hugs for Messi, who was also named a top three finalist for the Ballon d’Or and Puskás awards. ¡Felicidades!
