Talk about timing. On November 3rd, seventeen days before the start of the World Cup Qatar 2022, Netflix is set to premiere Sean eternos: Campeones de América, a documentary about Argentina’s road to the 2021 Copa America, with the trailer just dropping.

It’s not just any documentary, not just any win. Before last year’s Copa America win, Argentina’s national team hadn’t won a major tournament in 28 years, despite having arguably the best player in the world for a good number of those years in Lionel Messi . And now, as the team heads into the World Cup as one of the favorites, it seems like a good time to remember how this team has managed to defy expectations before – not just other people’s, but themselves.

This is, after all, a generation of players that for the most part, grew up with a team that just didn’t win . A team that managed to get to the finals, only to lose them, in devastating fashion after devastating fashion. Most of them do not remember the Maradona years, or were too young to truly enjoy them. This is a team that has had to fight to feel like winners … and a team that really, really feels the love for their country and the game.

There are tears in the trailer. There’s fútbol, too. Joy. And a smile the likes we haven’t seen on the face of a Lionel Messi that Argentina hopes can give them one more win, one more big moment of happiness, before he decides it’s time to stop playing. We’ll see where the roads leads Argentina next starting in a couple of weeks. For now, all their fans can enjoy this memory of the time they did win.
