Canelo Álvarez is getting pushback from Sergio Agüero after a shocking row on Twitter where the boxer came after Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

It all started when a video was posted of the Argentinian team celebrating their win against Mexico. On it, a Mexican shirt could be seen on the floor, and as Messi sat down to remove his cleat, he inadvertently kicked it away. The Mexican boxer reacted to the video by threatening Messi.

In response, a lot of people have spoken up on Messi’s behalf, including his close friend and former teammate with Argentina since they were both teenagers, Sergio Agüero. He responded to Álvarez on Twitter, referring to the boxer as “Señor Canelo.” Agüero told him not to “look for excuses or problems,” before explaining that shirts are always thrown to the floor after games, because they’re sweaty.

Álvarez (not so shockingly) continued the back and forth with Agüero, who responded one final time on Twitter before taking to his Twitch channel, which boasts 4.2 million followers, to respond to the boxer. On the stream, Agüero tells Álvarez to “never set foot on Argentina,” because in Argentina saying something against Messi (or Maradona) is “playing with fire.” He also tells Álvarez he used to follow him on Instagram, but not anymore, stating “I used to like you, not anymore.”

Agüero isn’t the only person to come to Messi’s defense, with Andrés Guardado himself, the captain of the Mexico National Team, telling TyC sports that “Canelo doesn’t understand what happens in a locker room.”

Meanwhile, Mexican player Miguel Layun also appealed to Álvarez, only for Álvarez to mock him with a screenshot of a previous conversation and then delete the tweet. In addition, the original tweet threatening Messi violated Twitter rules and has now been removed from Twitter.

With all eyes firmly on the games both teams still have to play at the 2022 World Cup, hopefully, the focus will shift to that and not the back-and-forth Canelo Álvarez continues to have with Sergio Agüero and others online.
