With This Magical Goal, Messi Becomes Argentina’s Top Scorer of All Time

Messi may one day go down as the GOAT, and with a bit of magic Tuesday night against the United States, he took his place at the top of Argentina’s scoring charts, taking over from Gabriel Batistuta.

In true Messi fashion, the record breaker 55th goal had to be special. He curled a free kick into the top right corner past a helpless Brad Guzan.

At 28 years old, he’s been the central figure for the Albicelestes for about a decade, and hopefully, for Argentina and for us, there’ll be many years of this yet to come. Even more importantly for his legacy, Messi’s effort puts Argentina on the verge of reaching the Copa América Centenario final. After losing in tournament finals in 2014 and 2015, Messi will have the chance to lead Argentina to its first major senior tournament win since 1993.

He’s also not all about scoring though, as he’s racked up assists for Argentina and Barcelona, including the opener against the USA.
