In case you missed it, the twitterverse and blogosphere have been on fire since Tuesday when Deadline dropped a flaming turd of an article. Penned by Nellie Andreeva, their TV Editor, and titled “Pilots 2015: The Year Of Ethnic Castings – About Time Or Too Much Of Good Thing?” it’s filled with boo hoo white people complaints like:
“Instead of opening the field for actors of any race to compete for any role in a color-blind manner, there has been a significant number of parts designated as ethnic this year, making them off-limits for Caucasian actors, some agents signal. Many pilot characters this year were listed as open to all ethnicities, but when reps would call to inquire about an actor submission, they frequently have been told that only non-Caucasian actors would be considered.”
The author goes to great length to avoid using direct references to racial categories instead opting for the term “ethnic.” As if somehow, that frees her from being called racist. The overall sentiment of the post is the old “the ethnics are stealing our jobs” argument. It seems Deadline and their TV Editor didn’t see how offensive this could come across. Lots of people are pissed but Shonda Rhimes’ reaction has been the best/most on point so far.
