Is Eduardo Herrera a Mexican Ibrahimovic?

Eduardo Herrera played his second match for El Tri last night, netting the only goal in Mexico’s 1-0 triumph over Paraguay in Kansas City. After his acrobatic volley at back post three minutes into the match, he’s being widely touted as the Mexican Ibrahimovic (Zlatan). But honestly, he’s closer to former LA Galaxy forward Carlos Hermosillo.

Herrera possesses the strength to hold off defenders and is a good finisher. Like Hermosillo, he’s a traditional, powerful Mexican striker – as opposed to Ibrahimovic, who has all of that plus nice dribbling and shooting. Let’s be real, Ibra is one of the best in the world right now and Herrera is not his league.

This year alone, the 26 year-old has scored 12 goals in 28 straight Liga MX games, more than a half of his 23-goal career total since he debuted in 2011 on Apertura.

With that said, the Pumas player still has some work to do to catch up with Hermosillo, who is one of the greatest scorers of the Mexico National Team. Hermosillo played over 600 club matches, during which he scored 322 goals. He also made 95 appearances for El Tri and scored an impressive 35 goals in the process.

Herrera may have started off on the right foot on El Tri, but let’s let him come into his own before we start comparing him to Hermosillo or Ibrahimovic.
