Maria Montez Biopic on DR’s Very First Hollywood Star Is Finally Coming to New York

It’s been just over a year since we first shared a teaser from the Dominican super-production María Montez: The Movie, and now the wait is finally up for East Coast audiences. After a successful run in the Dominican Republic, María Montez will be making its way to New York-area theaters on October 2 for a limited release that will no doubt have every tiguere from the tri-state and beyond cruising to the local megaplex to behold the extraordinary life and death of Quisqueya’s original Hollywood export.

Or maybe they’ll just be going to get a taste of Dominican actress Celines Toribio, who both stars in and produces María Montez, and may be on the verge of her own Montez moment after nearly 10 years of grinding hard on the Hollywood scene. For those who were left with mixed feelings by the early teaser we shared last year (which no longer seems to be available), the new official trailer should make it clear María Montez is as glossy as it is ambitious, with impressive period detail, stunning locations, and grade-A cinematography.

As we mentioned previously, this big-budget biopic follows the improbable career of the Dominican-born Montez, who risked it all to get her shot on the silver screen and ended up being dubbed Hollywood’s “Queen of Technicolor,” only to die in tragic circumstances after pursuing her career across the Atlantic. Here’s hoping that this promising feature is the tasteful and grandiose homage that Montez deserves from her home country.

María Montez: The Movie hits theaters in New York and New Jersey on October 2, 2015.
