It has been a while since Adolfo “El Bofo” Bautista has made any noise in the world of soccer. The former Chivas star, who led his team to their last league title in 2006, is best remembered as the player that ran less than Mexico goalkeeper Oscar “Conejo” Perez during the second round game against Argentina in the 2010 World Cup, according to FIFA stats.
Despite the infamy many attribute to El Bofo, there are plenty of Mexican fans who still remember him very fondly. Just recently, a group of fans gathered a good number of signatures on a Change.org petition asking EA Sports to add El Bofo into the Legends Team of their popular FIFA video game series, alongside the likes of Pelé and Diego Maradona. It’s not surprising, then, that Bautista’s arrival to the Major Arena Soccer League has been received with great enthusiasm.
According to El Bofo, he had some options to play in Mexico’s first and second divisions, but since the opportunity of playing in the Chicago Mustangs arose before the Mexican League Draft, he decided to join them instead. So far the season has been a successful one. Not only has the Mexican player scored 10 goals, but he has also brought entertainment to his fans through his antics. Among El Bofo’s wide repertoire is his constant search for new celebrations.

In a recent interview with Vivelo Hoy online magazine, the 36-year-old Mexican player stated he would like to eventually retire with Chivas, but that he still has two or three years of play in him. In the same interview, the Mexican player remembered some of his most memorable soccer moments, like the time he led Chivas’ victory over Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores Quarterfinal (4-0 goleada included), making Boca’s coach Jorge “Chino” Benítez lose his shit and spit on El Bofo’s face.
El Bofo’s current relevance in the world of soccer is definitely questionable, but what’s undeniable is that he’s a player who will remain in fans’ hearts for many years.
