After being the highest-rated cable series premiere last year, Mayans M.C., the spinoff to Kurt Sutter’s popular motorcycle show Sons of Anarchy, was immediately greenlit for a second season. It wasn’t surprising. The show came out at the right time and is trying to do more regarding diversity and Latino representation in the era of Trump.

After nine months of little news, the Mayans M.C. season two release date was announced on home network FX’s Twitter account. Featuring a photo with J.D. Pardo’s character, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes was captioned with “suns out, guns out. @mayansfx is back September 3rd.”

The series follows Pardo’s Reyes as he tries to integrate himself into the Mayans motorcycle club. He simultaneously has to cope with his father, played by Edward James Olmos, who was a “Mexican OG” now trying to stay out of the club’s business. The second season ended with EZ’s slate being wiped clean after he successfully murdered a DEA agent. But instead of walking away from the club with his new life, he decided to push ahead with membership.

Mayans M.C. came out the other side of a fractious history which included several production delays and a reshot pilot; all elements that also happened to Sons of Anarchy. Regardless of that, the show has found an audience — one large enough to make it one of the most watched new series for FX. Now that we have a release date, expect a trailer to drop soon giving us a first glimpse at EZ and the gang. It’ll be fantastic to see the show’s second season premiere almost one year to the day since season one debuted.

Mayans M.C. season two premieres September 3, 2019, on FX.
