- Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) will star opposite Pedro Pascal (TV’s The Mandalorian) in HBO’s upcoming series The Last of Us, which is based on a Sony Playstation video game set in a post-apocalyptic world. Luna will play Tommy, the younger brother of a soldier (Pascal) who’s hope for a better future no longer exists. [Deadline]
- Karla Souza (TV’s Home Economics) joins the cast of a new vampire flick called Day Shift. The film follows a man (Jamie Foxx) working as a pool cleaner who moonlights as a vampire killer. The film also stars Dave Franco (Fright Night) and Snoop Dogg (Dolemite Is My Name). [Deadline]
- Colombian author R.J. Palacio will have her book White Bird adapted into a feature film starring Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson. Palacio’s last book, Wonder, starred Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson and went on to make over $300 million at the box office. [The Hollywood Reporter]
- Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (Jackie) is set to direct the film Lisey’s Story, which is based on a book by Stephen King. Julianne Moore is starring in the title role as a woman who begins to experience strange things after her novelist husband dies. - The Derbez family will premiere the second season of their reality show series De Viaje Con Los Derbez on the streaming service Pantaya May 20. The series follows the lives of Mexican movie star Eugenio Derbez (Coda) and his family. [Deadline]
- EGOT winner Rita Moreno (West Side Story) has been named as one of the presenters at the 93rd Academy Awards, which takes place April 25. The first round of presenters was announced earlier this week and includes Moreno, Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon and Harrison Ford, among others. [Variety]
- The Kings, a new docuseries on Showtime about boxing legends, will include an episode featuring Panamanian former professional boxer Roberto Durán, AKA Hands of Stone. In 2002, Durán was voted the fifth greatest boxer of the last 80 years by The Ring magazine. [Deadline]
- John Leguizamo (Chef) will star in a streaming version of Samuel Beckett’s tragicomedy Waiting for Godot alongside Ethan Hawke (Boyhood). The British Royal National Theatre considers Beckett’s play the “most significant English-language play of the 20th century.” [The Playbill]
- Oscar Nuñez (TV’s The Office) will participate in a table reading of the Ed Wood’s 1959 film Plan Nine from Outer Space, which is considered by many as one of the worst films ever made. - Eva Noblezada (Yellow Rose) will star in the upcoming comedy film Easter Sunday, which is based on the stand-up comedy and life of Jo Koy. The film centers around a family reuniting on, you guessed it, Easter Sunday. [Deadline]
- Trap music from Puerto Rico will be front and center in the new TV series Trap Queen from Puerto Rican writer Miguel Nolla. The show will follow a young gay man who returns to the island after a life-changing event. [Deadline]
