Nicolás Keenan is in Paris 2024 to represent his country, Argentina. However, the field hockey player has made headlines for reasons that have very little to do with sports. Instead, the internet has latched onto his relationship with Rob Jetten, a Dutch politician, and the similarities their love story bears to the recently released romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue.
To recap, and set the groundwork for the comparison, Keenan is a professional field hockey player who plays for the Dutch Hoofdklasse club Klein Zwitserland and Los Leones, Argentina’s national team. Jetten, meanwhile, is a Dutch politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Minister for Climate and Energy Policy until 2024. The two have been dating since 2023.
Not quite like the movie. However, the vibes get much stronger once you get to see them. Because once you do, the comparison just makes itself.
Just ask the internet. “In Argentina, fanfics write themselves. They are our combination of Heartstopper and Red, White & Royal Blue,” one tweet read.
Fans even dug up videos of the couple being adorable together.
Others compared their relationship to that of Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. Queen Máxima is also from Argentina. “Máxima’s story is widely known, but that of Nicolás Keenan with Rob Jetten, Minister for Climate and Energy Policy of the Netherlands, not so much,” said one tweet.
Jetten posted a picture from Paris supporting his boyfriend. Los Leones have played two group matches so far, with one loss and one tie. They have three games left in group play.
