Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is offering a bilingual education that is sure to make the business industry stronger.

The initiative is called Casa Latina. The university is promoting bilingual degrees (bachelor’s and master’s) to students by giving them the opportunity to take courses taught in English and Spanish on an alternative weekly schedule. And Davenport has bilingual support services for admissions, financial aid, advising, and tutoring.

“Graduates of this program at Davenport will enhance the pool of bilingual talent for businesses, while offering a solid path to careers in business, technology, healthcare, urban education and the sciences,” a press release from the university states.

According to Davenport, Casa Latina “is the only program of its kind in the nation” and includes degrees in accounting, business administration, education, human resource management, health services administration and technology project management. Even better, it’s all online, offering a lot of flexibility.

“Davenport is taking an innovative, bold approach with Casa Latina,” said Carlos Sanchez, the executive director of Casa Latina. “We are creating this bilingual program that will provide an opportunity for Latino students to overcome so many challenges. We are taking barriers down related to language, finances and geography.”

Registration is now open for courses that start in the fall of 2024. And scholarships for full-time students are available; $9,200 for undergraduates and $5,000 for graduate students. Students attending part-time will be awarded a prorated amount.

“We have taken direction from people within the Latino community to understand the needs and challenges they have to continue their education,” said Richard J. Pappas, Davenport University President. “We are absolutely committed to creating an environment with all the tools necessary for bilingual students to graduate ready to work and lead in bilingual environments.”
