Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal brought something different to the 2024 Emmys. The pair, who came on stage to present the award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, did so entirely in Spanish.

“Greetings to the millions of people who speak Spanish in this country,” Luna said and proceeded to explain what the category was, all in Spanish. García Bernal then went on to read the winner, also in Spanish.

The actors, who are both Mexican, are set to start together on Hulu’s La Máquina. The Spanish-language show follows an aging boxer named Esteban (Bernal) who decides to get back into the ring once more after his manager Andy (Luna) gets him a shot at the title. 3 Body Problem’s Eiza Gonzalez also stars.

Luna is no stranger to speaking Spanish at different stages. He recently did it at D23 as well, as he was introducing his Star Wars series Andor, which is set to return for a second and final season. Luna has also done the same a few times when asked to promote the show.

The reaction online was one of jubilation from Latines all over at hearing Spanish. Some said, “diego luna and gael garcia bernal presenting an award in spanish my latino people”

With some going as far as to thank Luna. “Thanks to actors like @diegoluna_ for using their voice and truly representing the Latino community”

Others were saying that “Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal speaking Spanish at the #Emmys feels right.”

And others commented on the lack of subtitles for the people at home: “diego luna and gael garcía bernal speaking all in spanish with no subtitles on or nothing lmao I love them”
