Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story chronicles the murder of two parents by their children, leading to a heated and unforgettable court case. As a result, viewers have found it hard to bounce back from such a bleak and hard-hitting series. That’s especially true after the family of the Menendez Brothers released a statement about the Monsters series, condemning it.

That being said, there are some great television programs that can help circumvent the dour vibes of such a dark show. The shows on this list have impressive Latine cast members and offer something a little lighter to act as a palette cleanser. The best part is there’s a high degree of rewatchability for each series.

1

Los Espookys

Los Espookys is a unique comedy that follows a group of people who treat the supernatural as a business where they “provide horror to those who need it.” As a result, the fabricated and real supernatural occurrences tend to blend and create some hilarious but spooky situations filled with laughs.

This show never takes itself too seriously, and that’s part of the charm. Its dry humor, witty characters and deadpan execution of classic horror tropes, from exorcisms to psychic events, make it the perfect series to watch for a horror fix that’s out of the ordinary.

2

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation is similar in tone to a series like The Office and offers some hilarious moments, often revolving around the couple of Aubrey Plaza’s April and Chris Pratt’s Andy. However, balancing their antics alongside Amy Poelher’s Leslie Knope as she tries to help her community while also balancing one of the best TV romances with Adam Scott’s Ben Wyatt.

The show remains a highlight of sitcom humor, and no matter how many times a fan can rewatch it, it’s guaranteed to have a laugh. The best part is it’s a complete series, so there’s no worry of an abrupt ending with any major cliffhangers.

3

What We Do in the Shadows

Inspired by the Taika Waititi film of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows follows three vampires (Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou) and their familiar (Harvey Guillén) as they navigate the supernatural world in Staten Island. Though it follows a different plot from the film, the series carries on the spirit of the source while offering even more for fans.

The humor, much like the movie, is fueled by its hilarious cast, with a couple of highlights being Berry and Guillén’s characters. The best part is the jokes are often so witty and quick it may take more than one watch to fully grasp and catch all of the rapid-fire jokes.

4

Superstore

Superstore is a workplace comedy that captures the trials and tribulations of retail life with hilarious grace. While there are many characters for fans to gravitate towards, the real pull is in the heartwarming relationship between America Ferrera’s Amy Sosa and Ben Feldman’s Jonah Simms.

The humor relies on the relatability of the situation similar to a show like Community. As a result, the humor always feels fresh and gives the series room for its characters to grow on the viewer in a way that makes it easy to rewatch.

5

Julie and the Phantoms

A light-hearted series for the whole family, Julie and the Phantoms follows Julie Molina (Madison Reyes) as she deals with the death of her mother. Unable to play music, she encounters three musician spirits who help her find her voice as they become a massively popular band.

Not only does the series send a great message about grief and moving on, but it also features amazing music and heartwarming moments. From High School Musical creator Kenny Ortega, Julie and the Phantoms has heart and fun and is worth multiple binges.

6

Only Murders in the Building

Led by the iconic trio of Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, Only Murders in the Building is a fun murder mystery that follows three true crime enthusiasts who solve and chronicle the murders in their building through a true crime podcast. It’s a cozy murder mystery with countless celebrity guests and has recently released a fourth season.

Gomez perfectly balances the comedic duo of Short and Martin and offers a fun and stylish mystery series that’s both interesting and addictive. The best part is even after watching the whole series, rewatches are even more fun after learning who the killer is.
