Netflix’s Emilia Pérez is giving its actresses a lot of chances to shine. The movie, which had a total of 10 Golden Globe nominations, making it the most nominated film of the year, also brought a first for an actress who has been around Hollywood for over two decades. Zoe Saldaña was nominated alongside fellow Emilia Pérez actress Selena Gomez in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture category.
In the film Saldaña plays a lawyer, Rita Mora Castro, who writes a defense for a murder case and then receives a very lucrative offer from the head of a cartel who wants to undergo gender-affirming surgery and begin living an authentic life. Rita helps, but years later, when Emilia wants to get back in contact with her children, even if she has to lie about who she is, things get very, very complicated.
The movie is a musical crime comedy, written and directed by Jacques Audiard.
Saldaña has had a long and lucrative career, one that has primarily seen her star in science fiction film franchises—including four of the highest-grossing films of all time: Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. In 2023 she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

She currently stars in the lead role of Joe in the Paramount+ spy series Special Ops: Lioness. She’s got no more Marvel projects in the pipeline as Gamora, though the character is still alive and could return. She does, however, have two more Avatar movies she is set to appear in as Neytiri.
People were celebrating her Golden Globes nomination online, particularly considering this is the first nomination of her entire career.
