The Golden Globes were meant to be a night of celebration. And for many people, they were. But The Brutalist director Brady Corbet reminded us that some things are more important as he took a moment to send condolences to Aubrey Plaza and her family during his acceptance speech for Best Director, saying “My heart is with Aubrey Plaza and the family of Jeff Baena.”
Plaza’s husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena passed away on Friday, January 3rd. He reportedly died by suicide. Plaza was originally announced to be one of the award show’s presenters before the news of Baena’s death was first reported. She was not present at the Awards Ceremony. There was no announcement as to what category she was slated to present. The two had been together since 2011 and married in 2021 on their 10th wedding anniversary.
Brady Corbet is both an actor and a filmmaker. He made his directorial debut in 2015 with The Childhood of a Leader and has since directed the musical drama Vox Lux and the historical epic The Brutalist, which earned him the Silver Lion at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. His win is his first major award as a director.
During his speech, he shouted out his family, and especially his daughter, who was present. She got extremely emotional and was seen crying as her dad continued on with his speech.

She even continued crying long after he was finished.
It was an important reminder that awards aside, what matters is the people you get to share these moments with.
