Bad Bunny’s new album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS is giving his listeners a lot to talk about. After dropping on Sunday (Jan. 5), social media users have been deciphering the Puerto Rican icon’s verses and references throughout the new 17-track album. Did you catch these references?

Benito is known to plant hidden messages and easter eggs through public appearances and social media posts. For example, he wore his camera on multiple appearances before announcing his album’s official name, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, translated as “I Should Have Taken More Photos.” Before unveiling his official tracklist, he and his team sent social media users on a location-coordinated scavenger hunt via Spotify, leading them to find out song names through images.

Social media users are now working to decipher his samples, messages, and references throughout the album. Turns out there’s more to talk about beyond “WELTiTA”’s shout-out to Jarabe De Palo’s iconic song “La Flaca”  and lyric reference to the classic salsa song “Periquito Pin Pin.” That’s just scratching the surface.

For starters, his intro song “NUEVAYoL” may sound familiar to your parents and grandparents because it begins with a sample of El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico’s “Un Verano en Nueva York” before it turns to dembow and reggaeton.

Other social media users are diving into the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York aspect of “NUEVAYoL” and explaining why the first song of the album is specifically special to the stateside Puerto Ricans. TikTok user @deffnotantt explained how it pays tribute by including not only the sample of “Un Verano en Nueva York” but also by name-dropping The Bronx (which is a known staple in salsa history) and why the Carribean social club Toñita’s is an important source to Puerto Ricans in New York.

But there’s more to unpack. There were many samples of old-school reggaeton sprinkled throughout his perreo-ready tracks. Besides Wisin’s outro on “VeLDÁ” with Dei V and Omar Courtz, the song also samples Plan B’s “No Voy a Esperar Por Ti.” Both Plan B members Chencho Corleone and Maldy are part of the song’s credits.

Moreover, on “VOY A LLeVARTE PA PR” he pays a quick tribute to reggaeton heavy-hitters like Alexis y Fido’s “Me Quiere Besar,” and Khris & Angel featuring Héctor El Father’s “Cazando Voy” by adding memorable lines from each track onto his verses.

Benito also takes time to reference himself and give us a throwback to his older songs. Whether done on purpose or not, “KLOuFRENS” takes us back to YHLQMDLG’s “La Santa” with Daddy Yankee. Another TBT wink is during “EoO,” where he brings back X 100pre’s “Solo De Mi”’s outro, reiterating, “Mira, puñeta, no me quiten el perreo.” “EoO” also samples Héctor & Tito’s “Tra-Tra.”
