Angel City FC, the professional soccer team from Los Angeles competing in the National Women’s Soccer League, handed out 10,000 ‘Immigrant City Football Club’ shirts ahead of their match on Saturday, June 14. On the back, the shirts read: Los Angeles Is For Everyone, in both Spanish and English.

The shirts came with a card that read: “At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that Los Angeles is stronger because of its diversity and the people and the families who shape it, love it, and call it home.” The card continues saying, “The fabric of this city is made of immigrants. Football does not exist without immigrants. This club does not exist without immigrants. This is our home. This is LA. This is Immigrant City.”

The last part was also heard on the stadium speakers during the game, which saw Angel City players and staff wearing the ‘Immigrant City Football Club’ shirts.  Singer Becky G, who is a co-owner of Angel City FC, also made an appearance wearing the shirt. She got the crowd to repeat, “This is our home. This is LA. This is immigrant city.”

Angel FC’s message comes across an ICE crackdown that has been especially localized to cities like Los Angeles, with President Trump instructing the agency to focus on places like LA, New York, and Chicago. There were numerous protests across Los Angeles last week in response to the immigration crackdown. Protests continued on Saturday, June 14, with a massive No Kings Day protest across Los Angeles and the United States.

Angel City FC is currently 10th in the standings of the NWSL, but tied in points with the 8th-place team. The first 8 teams qualify for the final series. And the season started in March and is slated to run until October.
