Lizbeth Ovalle Wins 2025 Marta Award For This Golazo
The 2025 FIFA Marta Award winner has been announced. The new award, which was introduced last year to recognize the best goal in women’s fútbol, has gone, for the first time, to someone other than the woman after whom it was named. Marta herself won the inaugural version of the award.
In 2025, the honor goes to Mexican player Lizbeth Ovalle, who scored a golazo for Tigres in a game against Guadalajara in Liga MX Femenil action on March 3, 2025.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino wrote on IG, “Lizbeth Ovalle scored a brilliant ‘reverse scorpion kick’, displaying a feat of wonderful technique, unmissable skill and great imagination. Thank you for this great moment, which has captured attention across the football world and congratulations on this deserved award.”
Back when it happened, Tigres Femenil made sure to point out that the goal deserved to be in the conversation for goal of the year. And they were right.
And Ovalle’s current team, the Orlando Pride, and the NWSL also celebrated her. As they should, because anyone scoring a goal like that deserves all the recognition. Ovalle moved to Orlando in a deal that ESPN reported involved the highest transfer fee in women’s fútbol, $1.5 million.
Marta herself also celebrated Ovalle on her Instagram stories, sharing the announcement of her winning the award and wearing Ovalle’s Mexico jersey on a story while congratulating her. Now that’s sportsmanship and setting an example.
