Reports of violence in Puerto Rico have been increasing over the last year, and when the public’s discontent finally came to a tipping point it was in the form of a puppet. La Comay, the puppet host of popular gossip television program ‘SuperXclusivo‘ made bold statements on the gruesome murder of a publicist, Jose Enrique Gomez. La Comay repeatedly mentioned that Gomez was on Padial Street in Caguas, which she says is “a center of male and female prostitution,” and implying that perhaps he “brought it on himself.”
Almost immediately, Boricua solidarity exploded into a call to boycott La Comay’s often hateful speech, which was described as “sexist, misogynist, racist, homophobic and xenophobic.” The Facebook page, Boicot a La Comay, was launched and quickly received over 73,000 supporters. Today at 5:00 p.m. in New York City and 6:00p.m. in San Juan, people are uniting in a vigil for peace for the island, and will be gathering at 405 Lexington Avenue and at the San Juan Convention Center, as WAPA-TV/WAPA America is having their annual presentations with advertisers.
If you cannot attend the vigils today, you can continue to spread the message through social media with the hashtag, #BoicotLaComay, and be a part of the movement. And in the words of the organizers: “Bring the whole family, your neighbors, all the people who no longer want this program which continuously corrodes our individual and collective dignity. We deserve better. We want better for our country, our community, our society.”
