After winning hearts by playing young Glinda on Wicked: For Good, Puerto Rican actress Scarlett Spears has another huge acting role lined up. On February 19, it was revealed that Spears will voice Bonnie Anderson in Toy Story 5. Toy Story 5 will be released in theaters on June 19.
“So incredibly proud to announce that @miss.scarlett.brielle will be stepping into the role of Bonnie in Toy Story 5 🤍✨,” the child actress’ social media announced online. “Grateful, excited, and beyond proud to see her bring heart, joy, and fun to a character we all love 💗 Thank you to her amazing team @coasttocoasttalent @ctcvo ! @leblanc.school.acting @loritalk4 @ivyartistsmanagement #Bonnie.”
Toy Story 5’s Bonnie—in the past voiced by Emily Hahn and Madeleine McGraw—will now be played by a Latina. In 2010, Bonnie came into theToy Story universe as the new owner of the OG child Andy Davis’ toys, including the iconic Woody and Buzz Lightyear, in Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. Fast forward to the upcoming movie release, and her conflict will now have to do with technology. The movie’s logline reads, “Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime,” signaling Bonnie’s introduction to a tablet.
In the new trailer, Bonnie receives a tablet called “Lilypad,” the plot of the story. The trailer features the iconic toys such as Jessie, Rex, Buzz Lightyear, and Mr. Potato Head navigating how to avoid another toy “extinction.” Jessie is also seen talking to Woody. She asks for advice on how to make toys popular with children again after seeing Bonnie choose her tablet over playing with her beloved toy figures—an IRL situation parents can relate to.
Spears is known for her roles in Wicked: For Good, Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado, and General Hospital. She will also be a part of The Last Mrs. Parrish as Zoe.
