90’s fashion continues to captivate and inspire audiences well into 2026, and the svelte wedding dress worn by Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in 1996 has taken on a life of its own.
With the release of FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, the famous bias cut dress has re-entered the cultural group chat (did it ever leave?), enchanting audiences through its classic design that reshaped bridal fashion, and thrust Cuban-American designer, Narcisco Rodriguez into the spotlight.
Narcisco Rodriguez was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey to first-generation Cuban immigrants. According to Rodriguez’ website, the designer’s “Latin heritage has always informed the ethos of his work, with its celebration of a strong feminine spirit and appreciation of the inherent beauty of the female body.”
Rodriguez met Carolyn Bessette Kennedy during his time working at Calvin Klein in New York City, and the two became best friends. According to an interview with The Cut, the two worked together and even lived in the same apartment complex. They were such good friends that Bessette even trusted Rodriguez to design her wedding gown in 1996.
According to Rodriguez, the designer “felt no pressure” while designing the wedding dress for Bessette. “I was making the dress for my best friend, and I never thought beyond that,” Rodriguez tells The Cut. The dress was made from silk, and featured a deep cowl neckline. The silky dress grazed the floor, and while pictures of this secret wedding ceremony are limited, photos indicate that the back of the dress exposed skin, further accentuating Bessette’s form, a signature effect of Rodriguez’ work. The dress was worn a year before the official launch of Rodriguez’ 1996 ready-to-wear collection for women in Milan.
Several rumors and made-up scenarios have surrounded the famous wedding gown, with the popular FX series leaning into the lore, showing Bessette struggling to put on the wedding dress over her face full of makeup, but Rodriguez puts the rumors to rest, confirming that it was only the two of them together in the bathroom, trying on the dress before Besette’s big day.
