Starting this week (March 13), lowrider culture will be celebrated in a special way.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will be paying tribute to the Mexican-American and Chicano communities throughout the Southwest with “Lowriders Forever” stamps and keychains.
The “Lowriders Forever” stamps feature five different lowrider models. Per the official website, the models featured include a blue 1958 Chevrolet Impala named “Eight Figures,” an orange 1964 Chevrolet Impala named “The Golden Rose,” a green 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme named “Pocket Change,” a blue 1946 Chevrolet Fleetline called “Let the Good Times Roll/Soy Como Soy,” and a red 1963 Chevrolet Impala called “El Rey.”
The stamps’ photos were captured by Philip Gordon and Humberto “Beto” Mendoza, curated by USPS art director Antonio Alcalá.
“Photography helps honor the hard work that goes into the creation of each car,” Alcalá said about his decision to design the stamp with car photos. “Using illustrations would possibly be more about the artist’s imagination than about actual lowriders.”
Lowrider culture has been tied to Mexican-American and Chicano pop culture since the 1940s, specifically being noticed for its out-of-the-box, flashy customizations, including the now classic “hopping” (bouncing) tricks that the cars do.
“Lowrider cars represent a great deal of pride on the parts of the owners, the painters, and detailers, and the car clubs,” Alcalá said in the press statement.
The 15-piece stamp collection is priced at $11.70 USD. Beyond the stamps, the USPS is also selling keychains with the lowrider photographs at $9.95 USD. You can pre-order the keychains and stamps now.
There will be a free and public first-day-of-issue outdoor event to celebrate the stamp launch in San Diego, CA, on March 13.
