Luis Molina-Pantin: Modus Operandi
This Thursday Henrique Faria gallery will open the show Modus Operandi by Venezuelan artist Luis Molina-Pantin. This show includes a variety of media: photographs from the interior of Chelsea galleries, a collection of old “mobile” phones from the 90s, an assortment of piggy banks from Venezuela and other interesting visuals. He’s also framed 8 copies of the book about Carlos el chacal venezolano or Carlos the Jackal, an international terrorist or revolutionary (depending who you ask.) The show opens Thursday and runs through July 27th.
Henrique Faria Fine Art 35 East 67th St. 4th Floor New York, NY 10065Carolina Gomez’s images have been all over Tumblr as of late due to the cultural relevancy and elegance of her images. In her collage and oil paintings, Gomez places precisely drawn jewels over the faces of female icons. In some instances she deposits starbursts of gems over magazine covergirls. The result is cultural analysis through juxtaposition of power, glamour and femininity. In 2001, Gomez was trained in Colombia as a jeweler, which accounts for the exacting detail in the gems. The opening reception for the show is Thursday, June 20th from 6 to 8pm, but if you can’t make it then, the show runs through August 1st.
Frederico Sève Gallery 37 W 57th Street, 4th floor New York, NYAnother exhibit using gem imagery is Edgardo Aragon’s show ‘Treasure.’ The Oaxacan photographer highlights 10 Mexican families in portraits with the humble remnants of jewelry or keepsakes they’ve managed to retain despite the harsh economics and violent devastation within the region. Another part of the exhibit is a video performance titled ‘La Encomienda,’ which links the pedazos of gold, silver and jewel fragments to Oaxaca’s old mining industry. On Sunday June 23rd at 4pm a sole performer will sing a composition of mining protest slogans outside the flagship Tiffany & Co. on Madison Avenue. The performance will mark the close of the show.
