State of the Art: Your Weekly Guide to LA’s Latino Art Openings

State of The Art is Remezcla’s weekly guide to Latin art openings in your city each week. Mingle with art admirers, collectors and casual passersby to check out these new works. And don’t forget to grab a free glass of wine…or three.

John Valadez and Cheech Marin — Vincent Price Art Museum
John Valadez creates oil on canvas works that feel fresh, real and rooted in Los Angeles Latino culture. The artist paints photorealistic pieces that take after street photography, capturing scenes that still feel modern today despite being being taken during a 20 year period starting in the ‘70s. You can meet the artist and get to know his work with a walkthrough this October 12 at 2 p.m. Valadez will also sign copies of the exhibition catalog at 1 p.m. along with Cheech Marin who will sign copies of his book Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection. Head over to the museum for a day that will surely get you more interested in today’s Latino art scene.

Group Show: Reverberation — Huntington Beach Art Center
Sculpture fans get a special treat this weekend with a group show that includes a diverse range of artists. On October 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. you can check out work from artists like Ruben Ochoa, who creates cool large-scale works made out of everything from concrete to granite, and Evan Holloway who works with the human image and materiality. The show is a good introduction to important contemporary artists for those less familiar with sculpture. Even if you don’t make the opening, the show includes a few other events like a panel discussion taking place on November 23. Stop by and discover your next favorite sculptor.
