Dia de Los Muertos Events
This weekend Dia de los Muertos celebrations begin with events put on by Viajero and Mincho Vega of the Dia de los Muertos art collective. A nicho-making workshop will be held this Saturday from 12 to 3pm at the Julia de Burgos Center where you can make small shrines honoring the memory of a loved one. There will also be a screening of episodes 1 and 2 of the Borderlands series that confronts the realities of “illegal immigration” Saturday from 2-5pm. Episodes 3 and 4 will be screened the following day Sunday form 2-5pm. Alex Seel a cast member in the documentary series will be present to answer questions after both screenings. This Friday will be an opening for Chilean artist Cecilia Avendaño who will be showing strangely odd, mobile portraits at Reverse gallery in Williamsburg from 7 to 9pm. These large scale photographs of womens’ faces are distorted through a form of digital manipulation that blends the facial features of several models. The fotos also have a mechanism behind them that makes them physically move to seem as if they are morphing and constantly in a state of flux. Creepy.

Abelardo Morell: Some Recent Pictures
Havana-born artist Abelardo Morell is showing fotos that flaunt his unique usage of photographic techniques like camera obscura. His photographs look layered as if one image is being reflected off another in an almost collage-like fashion. Many of the images include panoramic landscapes juxtaposed with an alternative reality that is distinctly divergent.
The opening reception is this Thursday October 23rd from 6 to 8pm.
