Nearly five million bottles of Fabuloso were voluntarily recalled on Wednesday (February 8) over a possibility that the product could be contaminated with a common bacteria found in soil and water.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the bacteria could cause serious infections in individuals with weak immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions.
The bacteria may have grown inside the product because “a preservative was not added at the intended levels during manufacturing,” representatives for Fabuloso’s manufacturer Colgate-Palmolive Company said in a statement.
Of the 4.9 million bottles recalled by Fabuloso’s manufacturer Colgate-Palmolive Company, 3.9 million of them never found their way to store shelves. The remaining one million bottles of Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner, however, were released to retailers like Dollar General and Walmart in the U.S. and Canada and sold online. The bottles in question were produced between December 14, 2022, and January 23, 2023.
The safety commission has reported no injuries or sickness from contamination. Colgate-Palmolive urges consumers to stop using the affected cleaner immediately. The bottles of Fabuloso that may be contaminated have codes that start with these eight numbers: 2345US78 through 2365US78 and 3001US78 through 3023US78.
Consumers should dispose of the tainted Fabuloso by tossing the entire bottle in the trash without emptying its contents. Colgate-Palmolive is offering refunds or replacements for the recalled items.
