America Ferrera has been a staple on our television screens since we were all young and learning who we were. Her role in Real Women Have Curves is iconic and spoke to a larger conversation within our communities of weighing familial obligations and the need to find your own path in life. It was also a chance to tell women that their bodies are perfect and beautiful and worthy of all the love imaginable.
That’s why we’re so excited that Ferrera has become the newest CoverGirl ambassador!
The award-winning actor is not taking the role lightly either as she understands the importance of seeing ourselves reflected in all aspects of society, even in beauty. Ferrera told People that she never saw herself reflected in beauty standards and it’s a touching moment for her to bring that representation to CoverGirl.
“I think if you were to go back and tell 17-year-old Gotta Kick It Up!, Real Women Have Curves America, or even 9-year old America, 10-year old America, that there would be a place for her in the mainstream narrative about beauty, she would pass out and faint and not understand,” Ferrera said to People.
CoverGirl admits that the company has long had its eye on Ferrera and embraces her message of owning one’s identity. For years, Ferrera has been a woman who’s broken barriers in entertainment as an actor, producer, and director and now she gets to break barriers in beauty.
“We have admired America for years and her message about owning your identity as your superpower,” Stefano Curti, Coty’s chief brands’ officer, consumer beauty, said in a statement. “She is intelligent, authentic, and fearless and always honors herself, which is exactly what the CoverGirl brand loves about her.”
Way to go, mija! We love to see our favorites succeeding and elevating our culture and beauty to the world.
