Now that we’ve told you which Latino artists you should scope out at the 2011 Armory Show (underway now until March 6th), it’s time we tell you who exactly is representing them. Not only does it help to know the names of galleries at the Armory (it’s like a maze, you WILL get lost without a guide), but it also helps you appreciate where the backing comes from. If these galleries didn’t scout the work/artists, then the world would be a very empty looking space. It’s because of these galleries the artists can continue to explore and create—and in the process blow our minds. Check out the following galleries that represent an eclectic group of artists.

A GENTIL CARIOCA

A Gentil Carioca, out of Rio de Janeiro, is simply innovation at its most raw. Just managing through their Web site can be an adventure, which proves the possibilities of the art itself. The small art collective is located on one of the world’s largest open markets. They state that they want “to capture and disseminate the diversity of art in Brazil and worldwide,” and believe “that every work of art is a cultural melting pot with power to radiate culture and education.”

BARO GALLERY

Simply put, Baró Gallery knows how to spot talent. This gallery based in Rio de Janeiro represents a couple of the artists that we previously featured. They seem to have a keen eye for authentic talent. They also have a space to accommodate their artists, which has a patio, a video room, and the iron bridge, giving versatility to the artists and their mission.

LA CAJA BLANCA

With contemporary coffee tables and book shelves, when you walk into La Caja Blanca you might think you’re in a boho New York loft. But this is no New York loft, this is a gallery in the heart of Mexico City. They define their vision with the utmost principals in art collection, and want to lead “when referencing the national and international contemporary art scene through its participation in local and foreign art fairs, among others.”

CASA TRIANGULO

Casa Triângulo in São Paulo should perhaps be called the Bermuda Triangle––where reality blends into the Twilight Zone. This surreal aesthetic when approaching the artwork is very particular in detail, though mostly a wonderland into the brains of the creators. From an overturned red Volkswagon bug, to scenes of city life meshed with animation, you’ll be left wondering if someone spiked your drink.

CASAS RIEGNER GALLERY

Casas Riegner Gallery represents the epitome of contemporary art. It’s not hard to notice that their artists are pushing the boundaries. The installations, especially, speak volumes about the future of art, and, more importantly, the capability of artists. Whether it’s a large fern hanging from the center of the room like a chandelier or a semi-constructed room, these works will leave your head spinning.

Although Galeria Leme is based in Brazil, a slew of their artists are based elsewhere. They state that since its inception, they have “maintained an international outlook.” And of course they specialize in carrying works by Latin artists, they boast several from the UK and France.

IGNACIO LIPRANDI

Ignacio Liprandi reminds us of old-school art scoping. Not because the artwork featured there is retro or the ideas are outdated, but because it reminds us that art is also fun and enjoyable. Whether it’s black and white photos, images of horses with vinyl records on their heads, or maze-like gardens, Ignacio Liprandi explores innovation at its best.
