  • After a clinical trial in the U.S. and research from Chile and Peru, Oxford University and AstraZeneca reported on Monday that their vaccine is 79 percent effective overall. The data comes as several European countries suspended the use of the vaccine over concerns that it was causing side effects such as blood clots; AstraZeneca has assured the shot is safe. [NYT]
  • Mexico has placed restrictions on non-essential travel through the Southern border. The government stated that the decision is a COVID-19 prevention measure. However, many suggest that the limitations are in response to the US’s recent migrant surge. [AP]
  • Mario González, the husband of Delaina Ashley Yaun, who died during the shootings in Georgia last week, was reportedly held in handcuffs by police for two hours as they went through suspects believed to be the shooter. He was left with marks on his wrists. The shooter was later revealed to be 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, a white man. [Slate]
  • A town in Brazil warns it may be forced to take patients off ventilators to deal with supply shortages. Nearly every state in Brazil is reporting ICU occupancy rates of 80% or above. [CNN]
  • Demi Lovato went into detail about her overdose in 2018 and her journey through recovery during an interview on CBS Sunday Morning. In a preview of the interview, Lovato shares that she came close to death after overdosing and discusses her sobriety. [Rolling Stone]
  • Ricardo González Gutiérrez, the Mexican clown known as Cepillín and who performed on television throughout Latin America, died earlier this month in Mexico City at the age of 75. His family has said the cause of death was cardiac arrest and that he had recently learned he had cancer. [NYT]
