Remember a couple of years ago at the 2007 Latin Grammys when Calle 13 walked down the red carpet with a group of Arauco Indians from Colombia, all clad in white and chewing coca leaves? That revolutionary (certainly never seen before, or after) gesture and their explosive performance of “Pa’l Norte” that evening was not a publicity stunt or a random “We are the World”-type of theatrics.
Earlier in 2007, before their sophomore release Residente o Visitante, Rene Perez, Eduardo Cabra and a few of their band members, friends and some family went backpacking through Colombia, Argentina, Peru and other South American countries. They wanted to take an in-depth look at a continent that in many ways is so removed yet tied to their native Puerto Rico. A life-changing trip, and they filmed a documentary.
Below, watch a scene from the documentary, narrated by Rene. Somewhere in the jungle between Colombia and Venezuela, trying to make sense of their identity after being catapulted to fame and awards, the brothers can’t really escape “Atrevete,” (and those raviolis look good.)
