During the 30th anniversary concert of Radio Musical Cadena 100 on Sunday (June 26), singer and songwriter Carlos Vives told reporters that his friend and fellow Colombian musician Shakira was feeling “sad” after her relationship with her long-time boyfriend Gerard Piqué ended earlier this month.

“I know she was sad,” Vives said. “I sent her a little kiss and she told me that: ‘I’m sad.’ Yes, definitely, I do feel sad and she’s sad. It’s a very difficult moment.”

On June 4, Shakira and Piqué released a joint statement officially announcing their breakup. “We regret to confirm that we are separating,” the couple said. “We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.”

Since releasing the statement, photos of Shakira have surfaced of her and her kids doing everyday activities, but the “Hips Don’t Lie” icon hasn’t offered any more insight into the split. Rumors circulating are that the couple ended their relationship because Piqué cheated on Shakira.

When asked about Piqué, Vives didn’t have one negative thing to say about the Barcelona footballer. “Yes, I met him – a very polite person, very decent,” Vives said. “With me he was always very special, as we love Shaki very much, he was always very upfront with me.”

Along with Vives, Shakira’s sister, Lucy Mebarak, gave an update on Shakira a few days after the breakup. “She’s on the mend,” Mebarak said. When asked if the family expected this would be how Shakira’s relationship with Piqué ended, Mebarak said, “Probably.”
