Oedipus Rex was usually on those often-hated summer reading lists, but I know it caught some interest cause its plot was much like my mom’s favorite novelas I’d sit through every night. You know, the usual: troubled guy grows up to kill his father and procreate with his mother. Drama! In Oedipus El Rey, award-winning Chicano performance artist, writer, theater director, social activist Luis Alfaro, has partnered with Ese Theatro with a campaign on Kickstarter to bring his unique adaption of the story to life at the ACT Theatre in Seattle.

El Rey is set in the violent inner city barrio of South Central L.A., and follows the story of a young man who grows up in the prison system and embarks on a journey to break free from his past in search of himself, determined to create his own destiny. Ese Teatro is passionate about this inspiring story, and with your contribution, you can help this creative team achieve their vision of promoting and producing Spanish and bilingual theatre and empower Latino artists and audience through their productions.

Their Kickstarter campaign is running until October 11th, so hurry up and pledge to help Oedipus El Rey find a sugar momma!
